Online privacy and tracking Series - Intro

I’ve always been inclined to privacy as a core value. Not that I have “something to hide”, but I believe everyone has the right to a safe own space, away from everyone’s eyes, just to be. With the increasing datafication of our lives, on what we do, what we like, even on what we are, there are fewer and fewer spaces free from becoming a source of data. Data that’s often exploited by big enterprises, governments and anyone who will pay for it. As we move further into the future, I believe it’s important to understand how our data is created, extracted and exploited, how we are tracked and what can be done about. An interesting book about the datafication of our existence is Data Grab, by Ulises Mejias and Nick Coudry, you may want to get a copy and read it.

This is why I decided to explore how data transits, from our lives, from each of our actions, towards … towards where? And how? It will not look to create “privacy guides” or to promote any actions, but rather understand and bring light into an often opaque area.

Where we go from there is up to everyone.
